Pleat Planters

Geometry is often inspired by nature. Plants use angles and folds in their structures to build stronger constructions with mathematical precision. Similarly, in fashion, pleats are divisions of textiles that can create amazing effects while still fulfilling their function as a clothing factor. Both cases offer beautiful, aesthetic, and structural shadow-building effects and tectonics. That's why the planter installation is made from a simple, long-folding skin with an almost shy introduction of transfer details to make the whole object stronger and more enduring. By studying this iconic method of processing fabric, we were able to create a dynamic shape that is still minimal and beautiful to look at. A limited geometric rule set directs the pleats and plays with texture, light, and shadow. The installation represents a moment in the intuitive design and production research process. Besides, the objects are made from bio-based PLA material, which connects the material of the planter to sustainability and our environment. Not only do plants clean the CO2 inside a space, but the material of the planter also positively impacts the environment. The project was presented at the Hutspot concept store during Dutch Design Week 2018 in Eindhoven.
